Russia in a Haze: Will it overcome 2023?
On March 22, Andrey Kolesnikov, a senior researcher of the Carnegie International Peace Foundation in Moscow, delivered a talk on “Russia in a Haze: Will it overcome 2023?”. The coordinator of the event was the Director of the CCCS Davit Hovhannisyan, and CCCS researcher Narek Sukiasyan was the discussant. During the lecture, the speaker touched on the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the state and society, the economic, political, and moral environment in Russia, the outflow of young professionals as a result of the war, the adaptation of those who returned from the war zone, and the growing atmosphere of adaptation among the society. The speaker also touched upon the increasing role of China for Russia and its growing dependence on the former. He also emphasized the strength of Russia which relies on its wealth of resources (including human resources), as well as the readiness of the Russian authorities to become a supplier of raw materials for China, hoping that the PRC will be able to meet the demands created by the sanctions in return. He concluded that the current state of affairs suggests that the worst prognosis of Russia’s perspectives are not coming true.
