“Armenia and the Region”

Project name։ “Armenia and the Region” Donor։ Eurasia Partnership Foundation (EPF) Project description։ The “Armenia and the Region” project was implemented within the framework of the “NGO Depot – NGO Development Program” financing through the United States Agency for International Development (https://epfarmenia.am/en/document/Armenia-and-the-Region). The handbook of the same name, created as a result of the “Armenia and the Region” project, was part of a series of manuals published under the title “EPF University” on “Education, Methodology of History, Culture – Values”. The program was aimed at building the capacity of civil society organizations and individuals, to expand their capabilities, to serve the interests of different groups of society more effectively and to increase the sustainability of CSOs while successfully resisting the ongoing changes. Armenia and the Region manual was created taking into account the need for civil society members to have a credible source of information in these boundless and complicated areas such as Armenia’s neighbouring societies, their cultural, political and other peculiarities. The manual saves CSO representatives time to obtain the necessary structural-analytical information related to the region of vital interests of the Republic of Armenia from a single source instead of searching a large body of professional literature. There are three Muslim-populated countries adjacent to Armenia, only with the Islamic Republic of Iran Armenia has close ties and cooperation, and we still have pending conflicts with Turkey and Azerbaijan especially after 44-days Artsakh War. At the same time, the impact of the activities of Islamic extremist groups on the politics of the unstable region makes their study and knowledge more important and vital for Armenia. Armenia has trade, economic, cultural and social ties with Arab countries, and many of our citizens live and work in those countries where there are Armenian communities. Politically and diplomatically, Armenia has an active presence in a number of Arab countries, which makes the need for deeper and accurate information. CSO members need to know the basic tenets of Islam, which will be helpful in establishing relations and cooperation with Muslims. Due to these realities, the “Armenia and the Region” manual includes sections on Iran, Arab countries, and Islamic extremist groups, as well as a glossary of meanings of the basic concepts and meanings of Islam.   Members։ Davit Hovhannisyan (Project manager), Hayk Kocharyan, Anna Gevorgyan, Tatevik Mkrtchyan, Shoushan Kyureghyan. Duration։ May – September 2019 Outcomes։ The development of Manual for CSO “Armenia and the Region.”
